The Magnificent Magna "Maggie" Meteor

fields of mistria

Magna “Maggie” Meteor, born Fortune Hitherfollow, was raised in the Capital of Aldaria by her father, Jacques Hitherfollow. Jacques was known throughout the underbelly of the Capital as a two-timing charlatan, shyster, and huckster: he made his living performing feats of “magic” on dark, dingy street corners. He would regularly invite people—tourists, mostly—to play him in cards, shell games, or other cons involving sleight-of-hand, and he’d win every time. He was an easy-going, flirtatious man, loose with his lips and his hands, and it didn’t come as much of a surprise to him that he—at age 32—accidentally got a woman pregnant.

The woman, named Aliya Rothar, was a fellow drifter with whom Jacques shared a quick fling after playing a game of high stakes game of cards (which Jacques cheated in, of course). They didn’t have much of a relationship, and she didn’t even let Jacques know she was carrying his child—up until she left the baby Fortune on his doorstep. Those who knew her said she had been content to play the long con, saddling Jacques with his kid as retribution for cheating in their card game (and being generally conniving and unpleasant). Neither Jacques nor Fortune ever learned much about her motivations: she skipped town soon afterwards, leaving Jacques to raise Fortune by himself.

Jacques had a soft spot for children (he had raised many of his younger siblings before he eventually made his way to the Capital), and he fell in love with Fortune the moment he saw her. He named her “Fortune”, viewing her as a blessing rather than the curse her mother thought she’d be for him.

While raising Fortune, Jacques continued to make money in the same way he always had. The cons came effortlessly with a baby by his side: people would ogle and coo over the child while Jacques would fast-talk them out of riches. As time went on, though, Jacques grew worried his shady career would eventually wind up endangering Fortune, so he settled on a more savory occupation: a smooth-talking, silver-tongued horse merchant whose primary job was to peddle off sickly, weak stock to unknowing buyers.

As Fortune aged, she learned her father’s tricks of the trade. She, too, became adept at schmoozing and complimenting, though she did so from a more innocent place than her father. She loved the spotlight, and she would regularly show off magic tricks she had learned in order to impress her father’s clients, which would put them in a state of ease before making a poor purchase.

When she was old enough, Fortune began picking up all sorts of odd jobs to help Jacques with the rent: waitress, courier, street performer, adventurer, etc. She had always been fascinated by her father’s old magic equipment, and it was her dream to become a famous magician. Not witch, notably, but magician: she didn’t believe much in modern magic, instead finding more fascination in the mimicry of magic. Fortune believes that magic is based on belief: if you believe something to be true and allow yourself to be immersed in its wonder, then it’s real to you and that’s all that matters. Her tricks might be sleight-of-hand, but if they’re real to her audience, then she’s done her job. She delights in bringing smiles to the faces of her audience and boggling them with wonder.

Being a street magician was a tough gig, and she mostly focused on other side hustles. She squirreled away what little gold left over from rent and food to further her act—she hoped to one day be able to afford a fancy costume and modern magical equipment. However, rent in the Capital was expensive—and as Jacques aged, his health began to rapidly fail. When Fortune was 20, Jacques fell so ill that he was forced to quit his job and remain on bedrest. Fortune broke into her savings time and time again to cover bills and medicine, and before she knew it, she was working three to four different jobs in order to make ends’ meet.

It was during this period, at age 21, that Fortune heard about the small town of Mistria’s request for a full-time farmer. Fortune thought that farming might be a good way to earn money for her and her father, and it would be a rent free home. She took up the offer—however, as she was packing up their belongings for the move, Jacques passed away in his sleep.

Fortune didn’t have time to grieve. Mistria needed help—urgently. Thus, she set her and her father’s affairs in order and took to the road. When she arrived in Mistria, Fortune introduced herself by her stage name—the Magnificent Magna Meteor, or Maggie—and was all smiles, magic, and laughter. She quickly recognized that the town was in dire straits, and in order to put a smile on their face and bring a little magic back to their lives, she decided she needed to put her whole heart into helping. She threw herself into her new farm (“Magnicient Meteor Farms”) and made fast friends with everyone in town.

Despite her outgoing and friendly nature, there are a couple people in town who recognize that Maggie tends to keep her distance. She comes to the inn on Friday nights, but she turns down invitations to games or clubs. She goes to events and dances—performs in them sometimes—but shrinks away when people try to engage one-on-one. She fears any kind of intimacy, worried that people will see who she is behind her mask: not a cute, kind-hearted woman, but a sad little girl who hasn’t had time to process the loss of her father. How can someone so pathetic possibly make other people smile? She can’t allow herself to be a tragedy—only a comedy. She heads back to her farm early every night, needing time to decompress with her pet cat, Comet. It’s hard for her to constantly mask, and she sometimes winds up crying into her pillow (or to Caldarus).

Nevertheless, Maggie is passionate about helping the citizens of Mistria. She is also fascinated by Mistria’s connection to genuine magic, and she is especially invested in uncovering Caldurus’s past and unlocking more genuine magical spells. She can frequently be spotted around Mistria on her roller skates, delivering gifts and sprinkling a little magic into everyone’s lives

Goals + Values

Magician Ascendant. Maggie is a stage name. She performs at the inn as the Magnificent Magna Meteor: she has a whole routine dedicated to magic tricks involving cards, coins, manifesting bouquets and bunnies, endless handkerchiefs, and more. It’s her dream to earn enough money from her farm to purchase and/or manufacture better equipment for her routine—someday, she wants to travel the land as a respected performer and share her smiles with everyone. Mistria has certainly charmed her, though, and for now, she’s more than happy performing for just the town: she’s toying with the idea of establishing a “permanent residency” there, with people from all across Aldaria visiting Mistria to view her shows and engage with the town’s rich culture.

A Smile Goes for Miles. Maggie will always, always try to make people happy, often taking too much upon herself to do so. She will try to make herself useful in any way she can, whether that be acting as a courier, taking up odd jobs, or just generally lending an ear.

Real Magic. Maggie is inspired by the concept of learning real, honest-to-goodness magic. Her heart lies in stage magic, but she’s eager to learn more about spells, dragons, and Mistria’s history with them.

Thalia & Melpo. Maggie does her best to avoid letting herself feel sad, upset, angry, or otherwise. She expects this of other people, too: she considers it her job to distract people from whatever negative emotions might be troubling them. She struggles to process grief. Around people, she wears her comedy Thalia mask—while alone, she sheds her laughter and dons her mask of tragedy, her Melpo, and cries out her feelings. She only wants people to see her as her comedic persona. This, of course, is not a healthy coping mechanism, and Maggie should someday—through connecting with her fellow townsfolk—recognize that she is not a character, but a person capable of all sorts of different emotions.

Personality

Maggie is a bright, bubbly, and exuberant 21-year-old woman. She has a whimsical, kind heart: she always wants to do the right thing and make other people’s lives just a bit better. She wants everyone she talks with to leave the conversation with a smile on their face and feeling a little brighter. Her father used to say that a smile goes for miles; he tended to use this aphorism in relation to making customers feel good before sealing deals or making himself out to be friendlier to win their trust. Maggie takes this adage to heart in the most literal sense: she slaps on her biggest, sweetest smile and never lets it fall. She does her best to make other people smile, too, whether that be through doing favors, delivering gifts, or her favorite pastime: performing feats of show-magic.

Maggie can frequently overstep, and her genki personality can sometimes rub people the wrong way. She is so dedicated to wanting to cheer people up that she has trouble recognizing when they would prefer quiet or peace instead of bombastic joy. She gets a little sad whenever people shoo her off, and she takes it as a challenge—she responds to cruelty with kindness. Even so, she’s not infallible, and if someone is mean enough to her, she’ll eventually give them distance.

Maggie never lets herself frown. She believes that in order to make people smile, she herself must always wear the brightest one she can muster. Because of this, she has not allowed herself to properly grieve the loss of her father. She does her best to maneuver around sad, difficult topics, and she refuses to slow down long enough to let herself think about them. She goes, goes, goes—and it’s only late at night, in the privacy of her own home, that she allows her mask to slip. She sometimes finds herself crying to herself in bed. She can’t bring herself to look at any of her father’s old belongings (which she brought with her, currently stowed in a chest under her bed), because any reminder of him is quick to break her facade. She has immense difficulty when encountering friendly family dynamics, as they remind her so much of her father that she finds herself staving back tears. Thus, she does her best to make herself scarce before anyone can see the cracks in her immaculately crafted mask.

Maggie dresses as whimsically as she acts. She has bright red, kinky hair that she styles differently every day—she sometimes wears her hair down in a poof of afro curls, in round or star-shaped puffs, in space buns decorated with hair clips—or everything all at once. She wears fanciful, clown-like makeup with bright colors and stars painted on her cheeks. She dresses exclusively in yellow and oranges, and she gravitates towards star and space motifs. She has a full, pudgy hourglass-shaped figure, a thick and rounded nose, and dark red-brown eyes. She zips around Mistria on a pair of yellow roller skates: she loves skating tricks, and she prides herself on being able to perform her routine while wearing them.

Relationships

Celine
Celine is a sweet, gentle woman who Maggie naturally gets along with. Maggie regularly brings Celine flowers and asks about their origin—being from the Capital, she came into farming not understanding a lot about plants. She regularly pulls out bouquets of flowers from her “magical bag”, which delights Celine every time. Maggie is happy to help Celine with her codex, too, and has special interest in its magical properties. The two are close, but Maggie values Celine’s opinion of her too much to allow her guard down—especially since Celine is so close to her family.
Juniper
Maggie absolutely loves to tease Juniper. Juniper disliked Maggie at first, insisting her magic was obviously fake, but Maggie eventually won her over with enough good-natured favors. Maggie is enraptured by how Juniper managed to learn genuine sorcery, and she frequently asks Juniper for tutoring—and she’s happy to be a guinea pig for Juniper’s potions. Juniper is so blunt, brazen, and confident that Maggie occasionally allows her mask to drop around her, as Juniper is also an outsider trying to fit into the town. Juniper recognizes the sadness behind Maggie’s eyes and has awkwardly tried to ask her about it… but they’re not quite at the level of being able to really connect with each other yet—Juniper is, after all, pretty bad with people. Still, out of everyone in town, Maggie feels the most comfortable around Juniper. And Dozy, of course.
Reina
Maggie enjoys learning cooking tips from Reina, but their relationship doesn’t go much beyond friendly chatter. Maggie regularly performs magic tricks at the inn, much to the family’s delight, and she’s even ran food delivery services for them a couple of times. However, the family’s closeness makes Maggie a little uncomfortable, and she will laugh and brush off any attempts to be brought closer in. She’s never known what it’s like to have a big family with siblings and a mom, and seeing such a loving example so up close makes her just a little jealous. She recognizes this is selfish and unfair, though, so she would never vocalize her discomfort—she just prefers to keep a respectful amount of distance.
Valen
Maggie generally avoids Valen, having such difficult recent memories of doctors. She’s pleasant when talking to her—she doesn’t resent her, just associates negative memories with her clinic. She tries to keep her distance, especially after seeing her creepy underground lab… Maggie wants nothing to do with the medical field whatsoever. She tells Valen she’s afraid of needles, that’s all.
Adeline
Maggie wants very badly to impress Adeline and help Mistria as a whole. Maggie recognizes that she works very hard, and she regularly drops off cups of tea or coffee at the manor to help Adeline get through the day. Adeline appreciates Maggie’s dedication, but she hasn’t yet glimpsed what’s behind Maggie’s mask. Maggie feels like she needs to impress Adeline most of all and smiles especially hard around her.
Balor
Maggie recognizes the type of man Balor is—her father had lots of friends similar to him. Balor, too, easily clocked the lifestyle Maggie was raised in, and he was surprised at her ability to talk shop. Maggie is extra cheerful towards Balor and checks his wares every day, as well as teases him about how he managed to come across such cheap goods. She knows he has a good heart, and she’s confided in him once or twice about her father: she knows Balor can keep a secret, just like she’ll keep his secret regarding helping Mistria.
March
Maggie loves to tease a sourpuss, and she regularly spews March with confetti or pulls coins out from behind his ear. She desperately wants to see him smile, and she can sometimes push him a little too far in trying to “cheer him up”. They have personality types that naturally conflict. They don’t hate each other, but rather recognize that the other has a very, very different outlook on life. March would rather keep his distance, but Maggie rarely lets him. Olric, on the other hand, loves Maggie’s tricks and frequently invites her over, much to March’s chagrin.
Hayden
Maggie didn’t know much about farming before coming to Mistria, and she wound up relying on Hayden for help at the beginning of her career. The two became close friends, sharing afternoon tea and tending to animals together. Hayden is the person most in-tune with Maggie’s distance, recognizing when she starts to pull away. He tries very hard to invite her to clubs, and despite her constant rejections, he never stops offering. Maggie views Hayden like a big brother. She loves to perform tricks for Henrietta, one of her biggest supporters.
Ryis
Maggie and Ryis bond over their hometown being the Capital. They frequently reminisce about the city, though both of them prefer Mistria. Maggie tends to clam up when Ryis asks specifics about where she lived or what her father did for a living, given that they were in a bad part of town—she’ll laugh off the question and change the subject. When she occasionally struggles with adapting to her new life, she’ll seek out Ryis and try to learn by example. She often pulls doves out of her hat for him, much to his delight (and confusion).
Eiland
Eiland and Maggie have diametrically opposed special interests and wind up not getting along terribly well. Maggie isn’t particularly interested in the lore of the land, and Eiland finds Maggie’s attempts at modern “magic” a little disrespectful to the cultural history of Aldaria. Even so, she does her best to be smiley and pleasant with him, and she will regularly bring him any sweet treats she happens to bake—she longs to see a smile on his face as well as any other.
Holt and Nora
Holt reminds Maggie of her father, right down to the bad puns. She’s always very friendly with him, but sometimes the burden of her grief takes her by surprise and she has to excuse herself from conversations to calm down. She’s pleasant with Nora, but she doesn’t have much experience with mothers, so she doesn’t entirely know how to act around her.
Dell, Luc, and Maple
Maggie’s biggest fans. Maggie regularly performs for them and helps them with their schemes. She’s a kid at heart, and the gang views her as one of their own.
Everyone Else
Perfectly pleasant relationship.
Caldarus
As a witness to her dreams, Caldarus understands Maggie on an intimate level. He winds up being the only one she can really confide in. However, being an ancient soul so unaccustomed to mortal emotion, he can struggle offering advice. Maggie appreciates what he can offer, although it was hard for her to do: she was mad at him at first for violating her privacy and seeing her without her mask on. She’s since come to view Caldarus as a close confidant, and she occasionally allows herself to cry, grieve, or be a little petty around him.
